Want to change your life? Change your connections.

Are you stuck with a bad life? Do you want to change your life? Change your connections. Hang out with a better crowd. Your connections determine your story.

Do you believe that the people you surround yourself with will determine the course of your life? Look around. You will see people grouped together by status, interests, activities, and many other criteria. As a civilization, we congregate towards people who share our own beliefs, aspirations, desires, and wants.

Your Connections Determine Who We Are

I’m not talking about the family or community you’re born with. That’s out of your control. You can be born rich or poor. It’s not your fault.

BUT where you go from there is entirely up to you.

From the moment we can be free of our parents, we are the ones making our choices about the people we surround ourselves with. Do we associate with the good crowd or the bad one? Do we surround ourselves with inspiring & positive influence or the opposite?

We are the ones who shape our own character. We can be born into a bad community, but it’s still our choice to get out of it and form new connections that will change our story.

Your Connections Determine Your Story

How our lives will unfold is highly dependent on the crowd we belong to.

Be associated with ambitious and goal-driven people. Pretty soon, you’ll start realizing your own dreams. Surround yourself with lazy and mediocre individuals; and soon, you’ll lose your passion and be content with whatever life throws at you.

Let’s check ourselves. Are we connecting with the people who will bring us a better life?

Change Your Connections. Change Your Life.

If you think the people around you are pulling you down, then go ahead and change them. You don’t have to be stuck with the set of people you have now. We live in a globally interconnected world.

Want to be a programmer? Connect with them on social media. Want to be entrepreneurial? Connect with business-minded people.

You don’t have to be stuck in a bad life just because your surroundings are bad. You can change that.

Walk with the wise and become wise. Associate with fools and get in trouble.

John 10:14-18

John 10_14-18

I am the good shepherd; I know my own sheep, and they know me, just as my Father knows me and I know the Father. So I sacrifice my life for the sheep.

John 10:14-15

“I am your shepherd. Few people in your society know what that really means; you aren’t familiar with the life of a shepherd. But I want you to know that I sleep where you sleep. I lead you – even drive you – where you need to go. Unless you willfully reject Me, I make sure you don’t stray too far from the path, though I let you wander freely within My pastures. When you get stuck in a ditch, I pull you out. When you fall into a ravine, I rescue you and heal your wounds. Without Me, you would wander aimlessly, scrounging for food wherever you happened upon it, and be vulnerable to predators all around you. You wouldn’t survive. I spend My days and nights with you because it is My responsibility to care for you. You can’t take care of yourself. You need Me.

I like that arrangement. I enjoy shepherding. I develop a relationship with My sheep and teach you to recognize My voice above all others. You don’t know the significance of all the placed I take you or even why I take you there, but you can trust Me to guide you well. I may correct your course but I don’t punish you harshly. You’re sheep, after all. If you understood – if you saw the landscape as I do – you would never stray. But you don’t, and you can’t – not from your perspective. I know your weaknesses and am patient with you, much more patient than you are with yourself.

You need to understand that sheep don’t worry about the future, obsess about their mistakes, or strategize their lives. And if you knew the heart of this Shepherd, you wouldn’t either. Sheep follow. That’s all I’m asking you to do.”

Jesus I know I can trust my Shepherd. You’ve proven that You will go to extremes to care for me. Help me to follow you well.

Psalm 34:18

Psalm 34_18

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted. He rescues those whose spirits are crushed.

Psalm 34:18

Sometimes when we look at God through the lends of our circumstances, He doesn’t look very good. That’s because our circumstances lie to us. They portray a careless God or an indifferent God or even a brutally painful God. If He is sovereign, we tell ourselves, He could have prevented the crisis or chaos we’re going through. And yet He hasn’t. Therefore… and we fill out the rest of the sentence with an indictment against His good intentions.

Never in Scripture does God define Himself by the hardships of His people. In fact, the hardships often set up a demonstration of His goodness. It takes a sickness to reveal a Healer, a captivity to reveal a Deliverer, or a war to reveal a Warrior. Our need creates an occasion for Him to show who He is. So when we are hurting, it isn’t a sign of His disfavor. It may actually be a sign of His desire to meet us at a point of need.

Whatever is going on in your heart or in your life right now, it isn’t a sign of God’s displeasure or unconcern. It isn’t hidden from Him, and it doesn’t drive Him away. In fact, He is drawn to you in your times of need. Brokenheartedness and desperation are magnets for His attention. The key is lifting heartbreak and desperation up to Him as an offering, a gift of opportunity for Him to use. His love and compassion cannot refuse a heart that needs Him and knows it.

Tell God that you need His comfort. Acknowledge your discouragement and despair. Invite Him into your painful places. Know that He wants to you meet you there.

Psalm 34:10

Psalm 34_10

Even the strong lions sometimes go hungry, but those who trust in the Lord will lack no good thing.

Psalm 34:10

Our God is a God of abundance. He experiences no shortages. There are instances in Scripture when He lacked something for a time, like in Isaiah when He looked for someone to intercede and saw no one, or when Jesus did only a few miracles in Nazareth because He found little faith among the people. But even when human responses are lacking, He still finds a way to accomplish His purposes. He can multiply bread to feed thousands, turn water into wine when normal supplies run out, and raise up laborers to go into the harvest. His only limits are the boundaries of His own character. Within His nature, all things are possible.

Why, then, do His people experience lack? If He is the God of abundance, why do we sometimes have trouble paying the bills? One reason may be that we can know Him as Provider only if we have needs that require His provision. We have to experience lack and depend on Him in order to see Him come through for us. Even so, there are delays in His provisions that we sometimes don’t understand and limits on what we can do because our supplies are short. Most of us don’t have unlimited income; our resources are a factor in determining our options. We see lack everyday.

But that’s from our perspective, where we measure lack in terms of all our biggest desires. Whatever dream isn’t being fulfilled at the moment causes us to feel like we’re lacking in that moment. But God is always satisfying our needs and more. At any given moment, He is either providing or planning a provision. He may allow uncomfortable seasons, but He envisions no crisis of need in the lives of those who trust Him. We are promised His provision always.

Father I am trusting You for all I need, and I know You often provide much more. Please let me experience Your abundance in every area of my life.”

Freedom from Sin

Today is Resurrection Sunday. And the meaning of that is we are free from our sins. We are no longer under the curse. But what does it mean to be free from sin?

So you should consider yourselves dead to the power of sin and alive to God through Christ Jesus. —– Sin is no longer your master for you no longer live under the requirements of the law. Instead you live under the freedom of God’s grace.

Romans 6:11, 14

Because of Jesus’ victory over sin, we are no longer slaves to it. We have the power and freedom to live a life of righteousness, no longer succumbing to the traps of sin. We have the ability to say NO to a sinful life and to go on and choose righteous living. When we come to accept Jesus in our lives, and believe in His Resurrection, sin no longer has a hold over us.

I remember, a colleague asked me before, that being a Christian my life must be so boring. Because I can no longer drink or party or “have fun”. He thought my life must be dull and boring because I do not go out and “gimik” like the rest of them. I smiled and told him that I have never been happier and never been free. I can choose to drink and party and “have fun” the way they defined it but I choose not to. My happiness lies in other things. My joy is found in activities that glorify my God. I am free to make my choice but I choose the God-glorifying ones.

Sometimes, it is hard to explain – how we can be really free from sin. But it is something that is so heartfelt that I cannot deny the freedom. I can feel it – the freedom of choice – and the joy of knowing I can always make a righteous choice.

For the wages of sin is death but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 6:23

Sin leads to death. Not the physical one but the spiritual kind. An eternal death that I wouldn’t wish even to the vilest person in our planet. Can you imagine spending your life in perpetuity in darkness? Devoid of light. Devoid of life. Doomed to suffering for all eternity.

Yet God loves us so much He couldn’t bear it for us to go through that – forever separated from Him. So He sent Jesus to die for our sins – taking the punishment we deserve – so He can give us the FREE GIFT of eternal life with Him.

This is the very essence of resurrection. This is the very defining moment of our faith. Our entire faith hinges on this. For we believe, that by sharing in Jesus’ resurrection we will also share eternity with Him. Our destiny is no longer darkness and gloom but light and joy.

Isn’t that wonderful? Isn’t that enough to make your heart sing and anticipate joyful days despite the lockdown?

The Joy of the Resurrection

Today is Resurrection Sunday. The happiest day in my life. For today, more then two thousand years ago, Jesus won the battle over sin. The sin which leads to eternal death; the sin which cripples me with fear; the sin which kills me daily. Jesus, when he died from the cross then rose from the grave has won the battle with sin.

The song above encapsulates how wonderful His sacrifice is and what is means for all of us who believe – and who are called to believe – in Him.

We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin may lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin.

And since we died with Christ, we know we will also live with Him. We are sure of this because Christ was raised from the dead, and He will never die again. Death no longer has any power over him.

Romans 6:6-9

When Jesus died on the cross, he brought our sins with Him. For sin brings death. We will all die in the end – our lives are mortal. But because we are sinners, we will suffer eternal death. Picture it: eternal darkness – a darkness that doesn’t end; suffering and pain left and right. It is enough to make my heart break just picturing it. Jesus suffered that one for us. He became the sacrifice who took away all our sins. He went to hell. He experienced the eternal darkness.

And because He is God, He went back. He rose from the dead. He went back to life. He triumphed over death. He won the battle with eternal death. Why? So we can claim the eternal life He so freely offers those who believe.

It is a profound mystery that baffles me. But a mystery that is so clearly explained over and over in the Bible and so clearly becomes the basis of my faith and the source of my hope. That one day, when I physically die from this earth, I will not experience eternal darkness. But rather experience eternal life with the Savior who loves me so much, He suffered for me.

Who could imagine so great a mercy?
What heart could fathom such boundless grace?
The God of ages stepped down from glory
To wear my sin and bear my shame
The cross has spoken, I am forgiven
The King of kings calls me His own
Beautiful Savior, I’m Yours forever
Jesus Christ, my living hope
Hallelujah, praise the One who set me free
Hallelujah, death has lost its grip on me
You have broken every chain
There’s salvation in Your name
Jesus Christ, my living hope…
Living Hope

born again

Born Again.

Such a controversial label. Such a controversial term. Yet one that is powerful. One that holds a lot of promise.

Too many people have been persecuted for this label. Too many have been misunderstood. Yet for those who understood it; those who embraced it – there is much freedom.

When I began to understand what being born again means, it dawned on me what predestination is.

While we claim that Christianity and getting saved is a choice we make, I really can’t help but be convinced that it is also a revelation that God makes or gives to each one. I have seen many people – mostly friends and even family – make that decision to accept Jesus. At the height of an emotional setting, perhaps overcame by the music or the feel of the event, or perhaps pressured by the others who respond to the altar call, they also make the decision to accept Christ.

And yet, weeks after, when the spiritual high fades off, they are back to their old habits – forgetting that they committed their lives already to Jesus.

What happened?

Sometimes I wonder if the conversion was real? If the decision to follow Jesus, to commit their lives to him was indeed, in fact, sincere. It’s different from Christians who simply lost fire and zeal. These Christians at least know that they are still saved and are aware that they are missing out on God by being distant.

But the ones I am talking about, they are not even aware that they are missing out on anything. They didn’t even experience the hunger.

I imagine being born again as being revealed something so wonderful you suddenly grew very hungry for it. You want to know more. You yearn for more.

You cannot be satisfied. Your spirit was suddenly awakened and you became so hungry. Hungry for God’s Word. And so you do everything necessary to learn more about the truth.

Sadly, I’ve seen people be born again yet continue to live spiritually dead lives. And I wonder, where they ever born again in the first place?

Principles of Growth and Increase

Reflections from the Message delivered by Ptr. Cawir Ginting

Every man and woman was created in God’s image (Genesis 1:27). This doesn’t mean we are God but rather that we have God’s potential inside us.

Knowing the potential within, we must have a vision for our future

A man without vision is a man without a future. A man without a future will always return to his past.

Ptr. Cawir Ginting

Our vision is the picture of our future. In order for this vision to be fulfilled we must be filled with the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is the one who’ll guide us to have a blueprint for our lives. He is the one who will give us direction and wisdom on how we can fulfill our vision.

Sometimes our visions seem too long in coming especially if it is big. But as Habakkuk 2:3 says “If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, for it will surely take place. It will not be delayed.”

We may feel that our vision is slow in coming but actually God has a perfect timing and according to His timing it won’t be delayed.

When God says something it will come to pass.

When man saya something it depends on the situation.

Ptr. Cawir

We can always trust God to fulfill our visions that we have aligned with His will. All we need is to have faith in Him by fixing our eyes on Jesus.

When our focus is on Jesus, then we won’t be swayed by whatever situation we come across because we know that surely our vision will come to pass. Why? Because when Jesus died on the cross and paid the penalty for our sins, He also gave us freedom to become children on God – the descendants of Abraham pertained in the Bible to whom God has made an everlasting covenant and promise to prosper and always succeed.

In order to experience growth and increase we must become effecive and productive. This we achieve by following what Peter said in 2 Peter 1:5-8:

In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone.

The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

2 Peter 1:5-8 (NLT)

We must make effort to develop our faith by supplementing it with goodness that is readily visible; with knowledge that we acquire through continuous learning; with self-control and disciple; with perseverance and resilience – always bouncing back even when life hits us hard; with holiness; and with brotherly love for one another.

Our High Priest

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weakness but we have one who has been tempted in every way just as we are – yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Hebrews 4:15-16

Jesus understands what we went through and what we are going through. He became fully human so that we may be able to relate to Him and see how it is possible to overcome our obstacles through his grace and power.

Because of Jesus we can approach God’s presence with confidence and know that He can use our mistakes in the past for good and be assured that our future is secure in His hands.

The Greatest Decision

Everyday we make decisions: Minor ones like where to eat, what to wear, etc. and major ones concerning our careers, relationships, etc.

Do you know what the greatest decision you can make? It is regarding your faith — believing and accepting Jesus as personal Lord and Savior.

Joel 2:32 says “For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved”

And who is this Lord?

Romans 10:9 — If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart God raised Him from the dead then you will be saved.

Happy and blessed Monday ahead!
